In 1997 Karim and Sandro Saadé bought a total of 12 hectares of land in the suburbs of Latakia at an altitude of about 900 metres. They planted vineyards and founded their winery by 2003. Stephane Derenoncourt, a renowned consultant and oenologist from Bordeaux, supported the brothers with the construction of their winery in their homeland, Château Marsyas, near Kefraya in the Bekaa Valley, at about the same time.
The beginning of the civil war brought the more difficult circumstances and drastically changed the way they harvest. For security reasons, Karim and Sandro Saadé have not been on Domaine de Bargylus since the beginning of 2011. They manage everything by telephone from Lebanon. When the harvest approaches, grapes are taken to Beirut in a refrigerated container in order to be analysed. They will harvest only at the right time.
Grape Varietals & Region: A delicious blend of 60% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. Produced with the assistance of Bordeaux consultant legend Stephan Derenoncourt. The vineyard lies 900 meters above sea level, on the steep slopes of the Mount Bargylus coastal mountain range in North Caucasus
Taste Profile: Deep red-purple colour. The nose opens with an elegant bouquet of plummy black fruits, black olives and truffles, warm spice and touches of fresh minerality. The concentrated and powerful palate offers layers of complexity. Fresh fruit flavours of plum, fig, dates, black cherry and cassis are accompanied by generous cinnamon, clove, sweet gingerbread and white pepper spices. Warm and spicy, with a dark fruit charm. Rich, with fine and velvety tannins, and a long structured finish.
Winemaking Process: The fruit is hand-picked, then sorted twice in the winery. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel and ageing for 14 months in barriques (one-third new wood, one-third 2nd fill, and one-third 3rd occupancy).
Serve in Syrah glasses at a serving temperature between 16° – 18°C
